In December 2018, life changed dramatically for the Devienne family when 20-month-old Samuel was diagnosed with Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma in his brainstem, a location too delicate for neurosurgeons to safely remove. What followed was a long and difficult journey that tested Samuel’s strength in every possible way.
Over five years, Samuel underwent three different chemotherapies. The first two were unable to keep his tumour stable, and the swelling caused severe physical decline. Samuel became unable to move independently and had to relearn to walk multiple times. Two years into treatment, he required brain surgery to relieve pressure caused by a tumour cyst.
After three years of chemo that couldn’t stop the tumour’s slow growth, Samuel was accepted onto a clinical trial drug, a turning point his family describes as life-changing. Over the following two years, his tumour shrunk by an extraordinary 72%, and they witnessed remarkable improvements in Samuel’s physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
Today, seven-year-old Samuel is chemotherapy-free, deeply engaged at school, and the most loving big brother to Grace. While he lives with left hemiplegia, he approaches life with resilience and infectious enthusiasm.
And a recent milestone worth celebrating:
Samuel now has his MRIs without a general anaesthetic, a major achievement for a child who has been through so much.
Samuel and his dedicated team, Sam’s Striders, have been devoted supporters of Connor’s Run for several years. Together, they’ve raised vital funds and awareness to help change the odds for other young people facing brain cancer.
We’re honoured to have Samuel as a Legacy Ambassador, a shining example of bravery, hope and big-hearted community spirit.
This Christmas, Samuel’s story is a powerful reminder of why your support matters.
Every festive purchase, donation or gesture of generosity helps fund the research and support programs that give children like Samuel more good days, more milestones and more hope.
If you’re considering meaningful giving this holiday season, we invite you to explore our Christmas range, or make a donation. Together, we can help change the odds for young people facing brain cancer — this Christmas and beyond.
